Nanomechanical Sensing for Mass Flow Control in Nanowire-Based Open Nanofluidic Systems

Open nanofluidic systems, where liquids flow along the outer surface of nanoscale structures, provide otherwise unfeasible capabilities for extremely miniaturized liquid handling applications.

Liquidmass team has developed a critical step toward fully functional applications of the technology: quantitative mass flow control.

We have found a voltage range where mass flow rate follows a nonlinear monotonic increase, establishing a steady flow regime for which we show mass flow control at rates from below 1 ag/s to above 100 fg/s and precise liquid handling down to the zeptoliter scale.

The observed behavior of mass flow rate is consistent with a voltage-induced transition from static wetting to dynamic spreading as the mechanism underlying liquid transport along the nanowires.

The King and Queen of Spain, Felipe VI and Letizia, presented the Rei Jaume I Awards at the Lonja de València. Before, a tribute to the figure of the scientist Santiago Grisolía, its founder, was held. The ceremony was also attended for the first time by two Nobel Prize winners, Finn E. Kydland and Roger Kornberg, jurors of the awards. The latter was in charge of dedicating a few words to the figure of the professor, emphasizing that “Santiago’s great success in the promotion of science in Spain was due in large part to his personal warmth and generosity of spirit, to his selflessness and firm commitment, to his wisdom and dignity. Santiago was a gentleman. Those of us who had the privilege of assisting him in the process of awarding the Rei Jaume I Awards will continue to do so in his memory. Santiago’s contributions to science and society in Spain and to the Awards are his legacy”.

Montserrat Calleja, winner of the Jaume I award in New Technologies 2022

Montserrat Calleja Gómez has been awarded the Rei Jaume I Prize in New Technologies 2022 for her work in the application of the main advances in basic research in physics to practical innovations in the clinical field. Specifically, the awards jury highlighted her work on biomolecular markers and nanomechanical sensors for the early detection of cancer and infectious diseases. Calleja is a CSIC research professor at the Institute of Micro and Nanotechnology (IMN-CNM-CSIC) in Madrid.

The award was announced at the proclamation ceremony of the 34th edition of the Rei Jaume I Awards, which was held today at the Palau de la Generalitat in the city of Valencia and presided over by the head of the Consell, Ximo Puig. The event was attended by the founding president of the awards, Santiago Grisolía; the executive president, Javier Quesada; and the vice president of the Rei Jaume I Awards Foundation, Vicente Boluda. The president of the CSIC, Rosa Menéndez, and the delegate of the CSIC in the Valencian Community, Juan Fuster, also attended.

Mecwins announces licensing and co-development agreement with Quidel

Mecwins, company founded by Bionanomechanics Lab researchers and licensee of several patents of the group, Announces Strategic Partnership to Develop a Next Generation Platform for Point of Care (POC) Testing
This licensing and co-development agreement leverages Mecwins’ ultrasensitive AVAC platform and Quidel’s extensive expertise in POC assay and cartridge development.
Ultrasensitive POC testing will facilitate developing new tests, incorporating biomarkers and indications not possible with current technologies. Quidel got first FDA approved antigent test for SARS-COV-2.
06/15/2021, Madrid, Spain – Mecwins announced that it has entered into a licensing and co-development agreement with Quidel Corporation, a leading manufacturer of diagnostic solutions at the point of care, to jointly develop a new testing platform capable of detecting and quantifying biomarkers in concentrations below picogram per ml level in the POC setting. This technology will enable the development of new tests requiring extreme sensitivity.

Mecwins will use its high throughput ultrasensitive AVAC technology and expertise to develop a POC analyzer according to Quidel´s requirements and Quidel will use its extensive expertise in cartridge and immunoassay development to design integrated POC tests that support multiple biological sample types.

The approach will use a combination of localized plasmonic resonance detection with a standard sandwich immunoassay format. Financial and other terms of the collaboration were not disclosed, but both companies have been collaborating since December 2019.

“Ultrasensitive detection and quantification will be a new area of biomarker discovery and validation. Ultrasensitive technologies, below picogram per ml level, are now being used for new biomarker discovery in multiple diagnostic indications: infectious disease, cardiac, inflammation, autoimmune, cancer, etc. Taking it near the patient in a POC setting for an immunodiagnostic assay represents a challenge, but also a great opportunity to develop tests for better, faster clinical decisions,” said Douglas Bryant, Quidel Chief Executive Officer.

Mecwins Chief Executive Officer, Oscar Ahumada, commenting on this agreement said that “this agreement validates Mecwins’ approach to develop ultrasensitive technologies for biomarker detection. Having the opportunity to collaborate with Quidel will allow us to access Quidel expertise in assay development and accelerate development and market introduction”.

 El jurado, integrado por distintas personalidades dedicadas a la comunicación y divulgación audiovisual científica en España, México, Argentina, Italia, Rusia, Venezuela y Ecuador, escogió sus ganadores entre 35 obras audiovisuales finalistas y más de 180 vídeos participantes. Asimismo, el público dio su veredicto a través de distintas salas virtuales en las sedes iberoamericanas remotas de España, América Latina y, por primera vez, Moscú.
